In May, various industries saw significant job gains, including health care, government, leisure and hospitality, professional, scientific, and technical services, social assistance employment, and retail trade. However, other major industries such as mining, construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation, warehousing, information, financial activities, and other services experienced little to no change in employment numbers for the month.

Looking at different worker groups in May 2021 saw relatively stable unemployment rates for teenagers, Black Americans, Hispanics, adult men and women. Additionally the long-term unemployed workers remained unchanged at 20.7% of total number of unemployed individuals.
