India has just completed the seventh and final phase of its general elections, with voters braving high temperatures to participate in the process. A total of 57 seats across eight states and federally-run territories were contested in this phase, as citizens chose members of parliament for the 18th Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament.
The voter turnout in the previous six phases had ranged from 60.5% to 67.3%, indicating a strong level of engagement and interest in the election process. This dedication was on full display on Saturday as millions of people went to the polls, despite the heat.
The outcome of these elections will determine the fate of 904 candidates, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The results are expected to be announced on June 4th, after which the newly elected members of parliament will begin their duties.
The election has been closely watched both within India and internationally, with many hoping for a smooth and fair electoral process. The largest electoral process in the world has come to an end, but the focus now shifts to the outcome and what it means for India’s political landscape.
