Miami-Dade County health officials are urging the public to steer clear of certain water locations as the Fourth of July approaches. The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County has issued a water health quality advisory for Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach, 93rd Street in Surfside, and Collins Park at 21st Street in Miami Beach.

According to health officials, the water at these locations did not meet the recommended criteria for Enterococcus bacteria. This increases the risk of illness for those who come into contact with the water, so the public is advised to avoid water-related activities in these areas.

The advisory will remain in place until bacteria levels have decreased to acceptable levels as defined by Florida Department of Health guidelines. Enterococcus bacteria, which normally reside in the intestines of humans and animals, can lead to various diseases, infections, and discomfort.

The presence of Enterococcus bacteria is an indicator of fecal contamination, which can stem from sources such as stormwater, wildlife, pets, and human wastewater. For more information on test results and beach health, individuals can visit FloridaHealth.gov/HealthyBeaches.
