The upcoming general elections in Mexico are taking place amidst challenges such as violence linked to organized crime and tensions with the United States over migration issues. With a population of 129 million, Mexico shares a border of almost 3,200 km with the United States where a record number of 2.4 million undocumented migrants were detained in 2023.

Migration has become a hot topic in both countries, particularly in the context of ongoing election campaigns in the United States. Despite these challenges, Mexico is also facing opportunities such as being the second-largest economy in Latin America. The country boasts rich natural resources, including being the world’s leading producer of avocado. Tourism is another significant sector of the economy, with 41 million tourists visiting the country last year. Remittances sent by Mexicans abroad and contributions from cultural industries also play important roles in Mexico’s economy.

Despite its challenges and opportunities, Mexico has a rich cultural heritage that includes renowned filmmakers, actors, artists and musicians who have made significant contributions to global arts scene. The country’s pre-Columbian civilizations, archaeological sites and cultural traditions have been recognized by UNESCO further highlighting Mexico’s cultural significance on the world stage.

As tensions rise between these two neighboring countries, it remains to be seen how these challenges will impact Mexico’s future economic prospects and its place within Latin America. However, regardless of what happens next Sunday’s elections may bring, one thing is certain – Mexico will continue to play an important role in shaping not just Latin America but also North America as well.
