Mexico President Elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, is raising hopes in the agriculture industry with her background in science. As a research engineer, she is expected to make decisions that will positively impact the agricultural trade relationship between Mexico and the U.S.

Ted McKinney, CEO of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, is optimistic that Sheinbaum will lift the ban on U.S. biotech white corn imports for human consumption and increase funding for preventative measures against harmful animal diseases.

Maintaining a strong agricultural trade partnership between the U.S. and Mexico is essential. Both countries are in a unique position geographically, making them ideal trade partners. The upcoming first formal review of the USMCA agreement will reflect the strength of the current relationship, and McKinney encourages both countries to address any issues before the review takes place.

According to the USDA, Mexico is on track to become the number one destination for U.S. agricultural exports this year alone, with an estimated $28.7 billion spent on agricultural products from the U.S.. Sheinbaum’s actions are eagerly anticipated by the agriculture industry in both countries as they hope for positive changes that could benefit their businesses and improve their relations with Mexico.
