In April, the mining and metallurgical industry in Mexico experienced a 18 percent increase in production, marking its best performance of the year as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). Although this is a significant improvement, when compared to April of the previous year, there was actually a 3.5 percent decrease in production. Despite this decline, April’s decrease was the smallest since a year ago and it broke the streak of 13 consecutive annual readings with contraction. The overall production record reached 83 points, which is a level not seen since last year.
Sulfur production saw a sharp decline of 49 percent during this period, while copper production fell by 23.4 percent and lead production decreased by 18.7 percent. However, zinc, fluorite and gold production showed increases of 1.3%, 2% and 27.6% respectively. Notably, despite some decreases in certain minerals, there were also significant increases in others.
