Drew Gilbert, the Mets’ top outfield prospect, is nearing his return to the field after being sidelined with a right hamstring strain since April 6. According to Tim Healey of Newsday, Gilbert is expected to make his comeback by the middle of July.
Gilbert had a strong start in Triple-A before his injury, collecting six hits in 25 at-bats and hitting one home run in just seven games. The Mets have benefitted from solid performances from their starting outfielders Brandon Nimmo, Harrison Bader, and Starling Marte this season.
Last year, Gilbert had an impressive season across two minor league levels with the Astros and Mets, slashing .289/.381/.487 over 116 games with 18 homers, 26 doubles, 12 stolen bases, 79 runs scored, and 59 RBI. His return will bring added depth to the Mets’ outfield lineup.
