Bernie, a four-legged emotional support animal, has recently joined the Swansboro Police Department. Bernie, a family dog, has a unique ability to connect with everyone he meets and bring comfort and joy to those around him. Administrative assistant Thomas Peluso first met Bernie at an animal shelter and knew immediately that he was the right fit for the team. With his previous experience owning a Great Pyrenees, Peluso understood the importance of finding the right companion for Bernie.

Chief of Police Dwayne Taylor believes that bringing Bernie on board was long overdue and that his presence has had a positive impact on both officers and the community. Bernie’s role in improving mental health among the officers is evident as they have noticed a difference over the past few months. Whether he is lying on the floor sleeping or running errands around town, Bernie’s main focus is making sure those around him feel at ease.

Bernie was brought on board to provide comfort and relaxation for officers who may face traumatic situations in their line of work. With a three-month training program as an emotional support animal, Bernie is well on his way to becoming an essential resource for officers seeking relief from stress. The Swansboro Police Department is excited about what the future holds for Bernie and grateful for his dedicated, furry companionship on their team.
