In recent months, healthcare systems in neighboring countries have been under immense strain due to the evacuation of thousands of critical patients from the Gaza Strip for treatment of complex injuries and illnesses. The situation is particularly dire for Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria, which are hosting a large number of patients.

According to Hanan Balkhy, the regional director for the World Health Organization’s Eastern Mediterranean office, the impact on these countries has been significant. As of May 30, less than half of Gaza’s hospitals are operational, with most of the medical infrastructure destroyed during the eight-month Israeli assault. This has created pressure on already delicate health systems in neighboring countries.

The closure of the Rafah crossing by Israel since May 7 has further complicated the situation by halting medical evacuations. The injuries seen among patients from Gaza are severe, ranging from compound fractures to ruptured visceral organs, requiring specialized care not readily available in the region. This has put a strain on healthcare systems in neighboring countries that are already struggling to cope with the demand for evacuation and specialized treatment.

Balkhy emphasized the challenges in quickly transporting patients to receive the required care and the impact on the delivery of essential medical supplies to the Gaza Strip. The situation continues to be dire for patients and healthcare systems in the region, highlighting the urgent need for international support and cooperation.
