Since 2021, New Mexico has recorded its first cases of measles in two young children under the age of 10 who reside in Taos County. These children, who live in the same household, did not receive vaccines and developed a fever and rash after traveling internationally. Health officials have identified two instances of public exposure at Aspen Medical Center Urgent Care in Española on May 26th and May 28th. Those who were present during these times have been contacted by the department, but if someone hasn’t been contacted, they are advised to call the NMHealth Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773).

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the room. Dr. Miranda Durham, Chief Medical Officer for NMHealth, emphasizes the importance of checking vaccine records and seeking medical attention if symptoms develop after exposure. Symptoms of measles typically appear 7-21 days after exposure and include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a red-spotted rash that starts on the head or face and spreads to the rest of the body. Children under five years old and adults over 20 are more prone to complications such as diarrhea and ear infections while more serious complications like pneumonia and encephalitis can occur in severe cases.

It is important to note that the measles vaccine is highly effective and safe, providing protection against the virus. If you suspect you may have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms, contact your medical provider promptly to prevent spreading the virus to others. The New Mexico Department of Health advises everyone to ensure their vaccinations are up to date to prevent further outbreaks of this highly infectious disease.
