McPherson College in Kansas has recently received $2.1 million in funding to establish an educational center focused on Rural & Community Health Science. This new program will offer students opportunities to specialize in clinical, administrative, behavioral, or community health areas. It is a significant milestone for the college as it marks their first federal funding received through congressionally directed spending.

During the funding announcement on June 27, 2024, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran and McPherson College President Michael Schneider were present to celebrate the news. Senator Moran emphasized the importance of training healthcare providers to specifically serve rural communities, and expressed his confidence that this funding will equip McPherson College to train more students in various health professions. President Schneider echoed these sentiments, highlighting the program’s potential to address the need for healthcare professionals in rural areas.

The funding will be utilized to upgrade portions of the school’s science hall, which will include enhancements to laboratories and technology. Additionally, a portion of the funds will be allocated towards professional development opportunities. This significant investment in McPherson College will strengthen rural health in Kansas and support the placement of more graduates in rural communities.
