The May 6 election votes were canvassed during the council meeting in Dayton on Monday night, and various related matters were discussed. Council approved the election results and swore in the winners, including incumbent councilman John Headrick and newly elected councilman Harry Barnes, Jr.

Barnes took the seat previously held by outgoing council member Sherial Lawson, who was recognized for her service by Mayor Martin Mudd. A runoff election was ordered for June 15 between the top two candidates in the Position 2 race, as neither candidate received the required majority in the May 6 contest.

During the meeting, discussions also took place on a request to rezone a 5.65-acre property near the Grand Parkway and FM 1413. The property was proposed to be rezoned from General Commercial to Suburban Residential, a decision endorsed by city staff and the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Some council members, including Headrick, expressed concerns about changing the property to residential given its proximity to the Grand Parkway. Headrick felt that the commercial designation reflected a forward-looking approach, especially considering the property’s access to an important intersection.
