The Perseverance rover on Mars has made a remarkable discovery of a unique pale rock that stands out against the dark landscape of the planet. Named Atoko Point, this light-colored boulder is similar in color to a cliff in the Grand Canyon National Park and has sparked curiosity among geologists about its origin and what it could reveal about Mars’ past.

The rover landed on Mars in February 2021 and has been exploring the Jezero crater in the central region of the planet ever since. This pale rock was discovered through a mosaic of 18 images captured by the rover’s cameras in May. Analysis by the rover’s equipment confirmed that Atoko Point contains at least two minerals, pyroxene and feldspar, which opens up new possibilities for understanding Mars’ geological history.

NASA geologists believe that this rock could have been transported to the Jezero crater by an ancient river or could be a remnant from deeper within Mars’ soil that has been brought to the surface through erosion. It is also possible that Atoko Point is part of a larger mineral deposit, which would provide valuable insights into Mars’ geology and climate.

This discovery marks the first time that such a pale rock has been observed on Mars, making it an important milestone in our ongoing exploration of this fascinating planet.
