Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) recently conducted a fan survey that revealed strong opposition to the current form of VAR in football. The survey results, a result of collaboration between MUST and the club, with input from over 100,000 MUST members and United season ticket holders.
Out of the 16,226 responses received, only 0.6% supported maintaining the current implementation of VAR without any changes. The vast majority of respondents were split between wanting to abolish the system completely (50.6%) or continue using VAR with improvements to address existing issues (48.8%).
Among those advocating for changes to the system, the most commonly suggested improvements included better communication with fans, faster decision-making, and using VAR only to confirm “clear and obvious” errors. The general sentiment expressed through the survey was that football fans are fed up and disappointed with VAR, believing it has made the game worse rather than better.
