Lufthansa, the German airline, has announced that prices for tickets purchased after June 26 for flights after December 31, 2024 will increase due to a new European regulation. This regulation requires airlines to switch to more environmentally friendly fuel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The price increase will vary based on the length of the flight, with short and medium flights seeing a 5-7 euro increase and long-haul flights seeing an increase of 18-72 euros, depending on the class.

This price increase will affect all airlines within the Lufthansa Group, including Eurowings, Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. The European Union directive that is coming into force requires airlines to use 2% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2025 and this requirement will increase to 70% by 2050.

As a result of this new regulation, Lufthansa and other airlines within the group will need to make significant changes to their operations in order to comply. They will need to invest in sustainable aviation fuel and make adjustments to their pricing structure to accommodate the increased costs. Customers should be prepared for higher ticket prices on flights after December 31, 2024 as the industry works towards a more environmentally friendly future.
