Lionel Messi has left the possibility open of playing in the 2026 World Cup despite previously stating that he would not participate. The soccer superstar, who will be 38 when the tournament begins and turn 39 during its duration, has been encouraged by his teammate Alexis Mac Allister to stay with the squad.

In an interview with InfoBae, Messi revealed that he has not made a final decision on his participation in 2026. He stated that it will depend on how he feels physically and whether he believes he can contribute at a high level. Despite his incredible performance in the 2022 World Cup final, where Argentina defeated France to win their first title since 1986, Messi admitted that he has never watched the match. He explained that he feels “embarrassed” watching his own matches and prefers to keep his memories of the games in his mind rather than revisiting them through videos.

Since making his debut for Argentina in 2005, Messi has scored 106 goals in 180 international appearances. His physical condition and performance level as the tournament approaches are crucial factors that will determine whether or not he will play in the 2026 World Cup.

Messi’s teammate Mac Allister spoke about how important it is for him to remain with the squad for another major tournament like the World Cup. “We really want him to be part of it,” said Mac Allister. “He’s an incredible player, and we think he still has so much to offer.”

Despite his reservations, Messi continues to work hard on improving his game and staying fit for future tournaments. With Argentina aiming to defend their Copa America title this summer in the U.S., fans around the world eagerly await news on whether or not Messi will be a part of their squad.

The possibility of Messi playing in another World Cup remains uncertain as it depends on various factors including his physical condition and performance level as the tournament approaches. However, one thing is clear – Lionel Messi remains one of the greatest soccer players of all time and continues to inspire millions around the world with every game played!
