A 54-year-old woman suffered from persistent abdominal pain that lasted for a year. After undergoing an examination, doctors discovered stones filling the bile ducts, dilated bile ducts, and atrophic cirrhosis of the left liver. This necessitated surgery to remove the damaged portion of the liver. The patient also had a history of diabetes and hypertension. Stones in the left liver had been present for a year without treatment, but this time, laparoscopic surgery was performed to remove the atrophied left liver lobe containing gallstones that caused persistent pain. The healthy parts of the liver were preserved during the surgery.

After nine days, the patient was relieved of abdominal cramps and discharged from the hospital. MSc. Nguyen Truong Vinh Xuan from the Department of General Surgery emphasized the importance of prompt treatment to prevent severe complications like purulent cholangitis, cirrhosis, and biliary strictures. Severe cases can lead to conditions like sepsis and cholangiocarcinoma, posing a high risk of death.

Doctors highlighted the dangers of stones in the liver compared to other locations and urged patients to seek medical attention at the first signs of unusual digestive symptoms. Timely detection and treatment are crucial to avoid complications that could make treatment challenging and life-threatening.

In conclusion, stones in the liver can be dangerous if left untreated for too long, as seen in this case where prompt treatment was necessary to prevent severe complications like purulent cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma. It is essential for patients with unusual digestive symptoms to seek medical attention immediately to prevent further complications that could impact their health negatively.
