Rooney, a legendary footballer with an impressive resume, is looking to rebuild his coaching career after a disappointing stint as manager for Birmingham. He holds the record for most goals scored for Manchester United and has also scored 53 goals for the England national team.

Plymouth Argyle, a Championship side in need of guidance, is in talks with Rooney about potentially taking on the role of head coach. The position became available after Ian Foster’s dismissal towards the end of the previous season. Director of football Neil Dewsnip and coach Kevin Nancekivell managed to guide Plymouth to safety but are now seeking new leadership.

Dewsnip, who knows Rooney from his time coaching at Everton’s academy, is familiar with Rooney’s abilities on and off the field. Rooney had a successful playing career with Everton, Manchester United, MLS club DC United, and Derby County before retiring as a player and transitioning into a player-coach role with Derby. After becoming permanent manager at Derby, he eventually moved on to manage DC United before being sacked from Birmingham less than three months after his appointment in October 2023.

Rooney is determined to prove himself once again and lead Plymouth Argyle to success in the upcoming season.
