Bette Nash, a legendary flight attendant who worked for American Airlines for nearly 70 years, has passed away at the age of 88. Nash, known as the world’s longest-serving flight attendant, inspired generations of flight attendants with her passion and dedication to her job.

Nash started her career with Eastern Airlines in 1957 and eventually moved to American Airlines after they acquired many of Eastern’s routes in 1990. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants paid tribute to Nash online, recognizing her as an integral part of their history. Nash was based out of the Washington, D.C. area during her time with Eastern Airlines.

Despite being diagnosed with breast cancer, Nash continued to work for American Airlines until her passing on May 17 while in hospice care. Guinness World Records confirmed Nash’s title as the world’s longest-serving flight attendant after surpassing the previous record holder in January 2021.

In an interview with CNN in 2016, Nash shared her passion for being a flight attendant, which began when she was just 21 years old. She recalled her excitement when she first saw a flight crew walking by and knew that was the career for her. Nash applied for the job after college and went on to make history as the longest-serving flight attendant in the world. Her dedication and commitment to her job have left a lasting impact on the aviation industry.

American Airlines expressed their gratitude for Nash’s years of dedicated service and bid her farewell on social media.

“Bette Nash was not just an employee at American Airlines – she was our family,” said American Airlines CEO Doug Parker in a statement.

“Her legacy will live on forever within our company and throughout the industry,” added Parker.

The airline also shared photos and memories of Nash’s time at American Airlines on social media, paying tribute to this remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
