In May 2022, Bette Nash, a legendary flight attendant, passed away at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her death was confirmed by American Airlines and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants on May 17th. Nash had devoted almost 67 years to the airline industry, starting her career with Eastern Airlines in 1957.

Nash’s passion for flying led her to become one of the most renowned flight attendants in history. Based in DC, she preferred to work on American Shuttle flights from DC to Boston, where she could return home each night to care for her son who has Down Syndrome. Over the years, Nash witnessed several name changes within the airline industry, from Eastern Airlines to US Air Shuttle and more. However, her dedication and commitment remained constant throughout her illustrious career.

Nash’s remarkable achievements were recognized in 2022 when she received the Guinness World Record for being the longest-serving flight attendant. Her contributions to American Airlines and the airline industry as a whole will always be celebrated and cherished by those who knew her best.

American Airlines expressed their deepest condolences over Nash’s passing in a statement praising her for her unwavering dedication to customers and employees alike. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants also mourned Nash’s loss but honored her legacy by offering their heartfelt condolences.

Brady Byrnes, senior vice president of Inflight & Premium Guest Services at American Airlines paid tribute to Nash calling her an inspiration to all airline industry professionals due to her wit, personality and passion for service.

Nash’s legacy will continue to live on through those whose lives she touched during her time as a flight attendant with American Airlines. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten by all those whose lives she impacted positively during her long service journey.
