Duke Vice President & Director of Athletics Nina King expressed deep sadness at the passing of Bob Harris, the legendary voice of Duke Blue Devils basketball who called five NCAA titles for the team. Harris retired from his role as the school’s radio announcer in 2017 after 41 years on the job.
Harris was a highly respected broadcaster, winning the North Carolina Broadcaster of the Year award three times. Former Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski described him as one of Duke’s greatest treasures. Harris called 1,392 men’s basketball games, 13 Final Fours, and all five of the Blue Devils’ NCAA championships under Krzyzewski.
In November 2016, Harris closed his tenure calling football games after 471 consecutive games, including six bowl games and Duke’s trip to the 2013 ACC football championship game. Krzyzewski praised Harris for telling the story of Duke Athletics like no one else could. He emphasized that Harris was more than just an announcer, but a beloved family member to everyone at Duke.
Harris is survived by his wife, daughter Bobbi Harris-McCoy, son-in-law Ron McCoy, and two grandchildren. The loss of Bob Harris is deeply felt by the Duke community and the entire collegiate athletics community. His legacy as a professional broadcaster and passionate Duke supporter will live on forever.
