Bill Walton, a Basketball Hall of Famer, passed away at the age of 71 after battling cancer. The NBA made an announcement confirming his death. Walton was originally the No. 1 pick in the 1974 NBA Draft after an impressive college career at UCLA, where he dominated the sport. He later transitioned to broadcasting where he provided insightful and colorful commentary on the sport.

Walton’s infectious enthusiasm and love for the game endeared him to basketball fans across generations. His zest for life and boundless energy were also noteworthy qualities that endeared him to many. In addition to his basketball greatness, Walton was also known for his work as a broadcaster, particularly covering Pac-12 men’s basketball.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver highlighted Walton’s impact on the sport, calling him a dominant force at UCLA as well as in the NBA. Walton had a successful career with the Portland Trail Blazers, San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers, and Boston Celtics, winning two NBA championships and being named NBA Finals MVP in 1977.
