In a recent announcement, the B.A.A.S. Aviation Science-Professional Pilot concentration program was launched by Texas State University’s (TXST) Department of Occupational, Workforce and Leadership Studies (OWLS). This new program aims to provide students with hands-on training in the rapidly growing field of aviation, which is experiencing high demand both locally and nationally.

The Department of OWLS is thrilled to partner with Coast Flight, an FAA-approved flight school that provides BAAS students with unparalleled training opportunities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a growth in demand for commercial pilots nationwide, with more than 5,600 new positions and an increase of over 4% expected from 2022-2032. There will be about 16,800 openings for commercial pilots each year on average over the decade, many of which will be due to the need to replace retiring pilots.

Felix Quayson, Ph.D., BAAS program coordinator, expressed his excitement about training the next generation of pilots and aviation professionals to meet workforce demands across the nation. Interim dean in the College of Applied Arts, Angela Ausbrooks, Ph.D., shared her enthusiasm for the new aviation certification program in OWLS and highlighted its anticipated positive impact on student learning and collaborations with industry partners in Central Texas. The program is expected to strengthen the department’s trajectory toward meeting strategic plan goals related to student success and quality academic programming.

This new program offers a unique opportunity for students who are passionate about aviation to pursue careers in this exciting field while gaining hands-on experience through partnerships with leading aviation companies in Central Texas. President Jim Wimberly from Coast Flight Training was present at the announcement along with San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson and TAP President Heath Jameson from TXST’s College of Applied Arts as well as President Kelly Damphousse from TXST’s Department of Occupational, Workforce and Leadership Studies (OWLS). They all expressed their excitement about this new program that will provide students with unique opportunities for career growth and professional development while meeting industry needs for skilled professionals.
