Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens is one of several franchise quarterbacks who have opted out of voluntary offseason training activities (OTAs). While some may speculate that this decision is simply a ploy to avoid the rigors of offseason workouts, recent discoveries suggest that there may be a valid reason for Jackson’s absence.

According to reports, Jackson is entitled to an annual workout bonus of $750,000 as part of his 2023 contract. In order to receive this payment, he must participate in 80% of the offseason workouts, excluding mandatory minicamp. However, due to missed workouts earlier in the year, it appears that Jackson will not be able to earn this bonus.

This same payment structure applies in years 2025, 2026, and 2027. It was initially believed that these bonuses were offseason roster bonuses; however, upon closer examination, they were found to be workout bonuses instead. If Jackson fails to meet the requirements for this bonus in any given year, his expected compensation for the following year will be reduced by $750,000.

While this may not seem like a significant blow to his overall paycheck, losing out on $750,000 can still be a substantial amount of money. It remains unclear what has caused Jackson to miss so many offseason workouts and why he has chosen not to participate in OTAs. However one thing is certain; if he continues down this path he will have a permanent loss of $75
