The 12th hole at Lancaster Country Club is notorious for causing trouble for players, with 31 double bogeys recorded during the last U.S. Women’s Open held there in 2015. Nelly Korda was no stranger to its challenges, having anticipated the difficulties posed by the shallow green located at the bottom of an elevated tee earlier in the week. However, on Thursday, Korda had a rough start during the U.S. Women’s Open, with a disastrous opening round that began with an opening bogey and continued with unraveling on the 161-yard 12th hole at Lancaster Country Club.

Korda’s tee shot landed in the back bunker, and her subsequent shot from the sand went too far, rolling into the water in front of the green. This led to a series of unfortunate shots into the hazard, resulting in a septuple-bogey 10. Korda visibly struggled with her emotions as she moved on to the next tee, adding two more bogeys to her score. Despite her recent success, winning six of her last seven starts and the Chevron Championship in April, Korda finished the front nine at 10-over 45, placing her in a tie for last place as she made the turn.
