At the Prefontaine Classic meet in Eugene, Oregon, Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet made history by setting a new world record in the 10,000 meters event. Chebet finished the race in 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds, breaking the previous record set by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey. Gidey had set the record just a month earlier in the Netherlands with a time of 29 minutes and 1.03 seconds.

Despite being only 24 years old, Chebet has established herself as a consistent performer on the international stage, winning a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the world championships held at Hayward Field in 2022. She also won a bronze medal in the same event at the world championships in Budapest the year before. The Prefontaine Classic is one of the most prestigious track and field events globally and attracts top athletes from around the world.
