Food safety is a top priority during grill season. Carly Zimmer, a registered dietitian & nutritionist with OSF HealthCare, provides helpful tips on safely thawing meat. Thawing meat in the bottom shelf of the fridge typically takes 24 hours, while thawing in cold water takes about one hour for a 1 lb. package of meat. If using the microwave, always check the packaging for specific instructions to avoid any issues.

Zimmer also emphasizes the importance of avoiding the temperature danger zone of 40 to 140 degrees, where bacteria can rapidly grow. She recommends washing anything that comes in contact with raw meat immediately and not leaving food sitting out for more than two hours. Leftover refrigerated food should be discarded after three to four days to prevent any potential risks to health.

Aside from food safety concerns, individuals living with diabetes face various health complications, including hearing loss. According to Dr. Chris Workman, an audiologist with OSF HealthCare, individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to experience hearing loss due to high blood sugar levels potentially impacting blood flow to the inner ear and hair cells. Low blood sugar levels can also damage nerve transmission and cause further complications.

To effectively manage diabetes and reduce the risk of related health complications, Dr. Workman recommends regular hearing tests, maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and adhering to medication schedules.
