Summer is a time of year that many people love, but it can also be dangerous due to the high temperatures that lead to weather-related fatalities in the United States each year. It’s important for us to be aware of the risks associated with summer heat, not just for ourselves, but also for our pets.

The Virginia Beach SPCA recently shared some tips on how to keep furry friends safe during a heat wave. One important tip is to never leave animals in parked vehicles, even if the car is running with the air conditioning on. In just a short amount of time, the inside of a vehicle can reach dangerous temperatures, especially on hot summer days.

Another tip is to avoid taking pets for a walk on hot pavement or concrete during the heat of the day. Animals can easily burn their paw pads on hot surfaces, so it’s best to walk them in the early morning or late evening when the ground is cooler. It’s also important to limit strenuous exercise for pets on humid days, as panting is less effective at cooling them down in high humidity.

One of the most important tips is to make sure pets have plenty of shade and water to keep cool. Providing ice in their water bowls can also help them stay hydrated. By taking these precautions, pet owners can help protect their furry friends from the dangers of summer heat.
