The Kansas Department of Transportation recently announced $3.5 million in grants for 13 innovative technology projects across the state. These grants are part of a larger 10-year, $10 billion initiative known as the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, which aims to improve access, safety, and mobility through the implementation of new transportation technology.

Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed emphasized the importance of investing in new and emerging technologies to create a more efficient and safe transportation system. The Innovative Technology Program supports projects that leverage technology to enhance transportation operations both now and in the future. All projects funded under this program are required to provide a minimum 25 percent local match.

The selected projects encompass a wide range of transportation initiatives, including traffic engineering enhancements, school zone improvements, aviation and rail upgrades, and the expansion of truck simulators for commercial driver’s license programs. The awardees include institutions such as Kansas State University – Salina, Bestifor, Salina Regional Airport, Seward County Community College, and the City of Overland.

Each project aims to leverage technology to address specific transportation challenges and improve efficiency and safety within the state. These grants demonstrate the commitment of Kansas communities to embracing innovation and technology to enhance their transportation systems.
