The Science Ministry has issued a directive to Kakao, the operator of KakaoTalk, to improve the stability of its service after a series of recent disruptions. Science Minister Lee Jong-ho made the request during a speech at Hanyang University in Seoul on May 31st. Kakao was advised to submit a plan to enhance its network operation system within a month, with results expected within three months.

In particular, the ministry recommended that Kakao conduct pretests before major operations, upgrade its communications disaster manual, enhance its monitoring system, and analyze the causes of disruptions in order to improve its system. This request came after three service outages on KakaoTalk this month, including an incident on May 13th where around 80% of users experienced difficulties sending messages for six minutes due to a server error.

Science Minister Lee emphasized the importance of providing stable digital services that do not disrupt people’s daily lives. In response to the ministry’s directive, Kakao stated that it will work on improving its internal operation management system in order to provide better service for its users. The ministry’s directive aims to prevent future disruptions and ensure a stable experience for KakaoTalk users.
