Kakao, the operator of KakaoTalk, has been instructed by the Science Ministry to rectify its operation system in order to enhance the stability of its service. This directive comes after three instances of service outages on KakaoTalk this month. On May 13, 80% of users had difficulty sending messages for six minutes due to an error with Kakao’s data center server. There was another six-minute outage on May 20 related to an internal system update error. Finally, on May 21, KakaoTalk experienced a 54-minute service outage as the company made an update to a server at its data center without addressing previous errors.

The Science Ministry has given Kakao until a month to submit a plan to improve its network operation system and show results within three months. Recommendations include conducting pretests before major operations, upgrading the communications disaster manual, enhancing the monitoring system, and analyzing causes of disruptions.

Science Minister Lee Jong-ho emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable service for users, noting that disruptions in digital service can significantly impact people’s daily lives. Kakao has committed to improving its internal operation management system to ensure better service for its users.
