The internet is mourning the loss of Kabosu, a beloved shiba breed dog and the muse behind the Doge meme. Atsuko Sato, Kabosu’s owner, announced his passing on his blog, stating that he fell asleep peacefully while being petted. Sato shared that Kabosu’s image went viral on Reddit in 2010, leading to the creation of one of the internet’s most popular memes.
Kabosu’s impact was not limited to just the world of social media. His likeness also inspired a cryptocurrency called dogecoin. Initially created as a joke, dogecoin has become an eighth-most valuable cryptocurrency today. Despite falling ill with leukemia and liver disease in 2022, Kabosu’s health improved thanks to support from fans and “invisible prayers,” as shared by Sato in an interview with AFP.
The exact age of Kabosu is unknown since he was adopted from a puppy mill, but it is estimated that he was around 18 years old at the time of his passing – a remarkable lifespan for a shiba breed dog. His legacy will continue to live on through those who remember him fondly and through the memes and cryptocurrencies that were inspired by him.
