England midfielder Jude Bellingham has been cleared to play in their upcoming match against Switzerland, despite being charged by Uefa for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct.” The incident occurred during the last-16 tie against Slovakia when Bellingham made a gesture while celebrating his goal.
The midfielder later explained on social media that it was an inside joke towards some close friends who were at the game, showing respect for the Slovakian team. Uefa fined Bellingham €30,000 and suspended him for one competition match, which is not immediately enforced but subject to a probationary period of one year.
Despite this decision, Gareth Southgate will have Bellingham at his disposal for the crucial match against Switzerland. The incident also led to England’s Football Association being fined for crowd disturbances and the lighting of fireworks during the game.
