The unemployment rate in Jordan reached a high of 21.4% during the first quarter of 2024, according to the Jordanian Department of General Statistics. This was a slight decrease of 0.5% compared to the same period last year. Despite this progress, the report highlighted that the unemployment rate for males was still at 17.4%, while for females it remained significantly higher at 34.7%.

The report also revealed that university degree holders had a higher unemployment rate than those with lower levels of education, with 25.8% being unemployed compared to other qualifications. Additionally, it showed that most of the total unemployed people had a high school diploma or higher, with only 37.9% having qualifications lower than that.

Mafraq Governorate in northern Jordan had the highest unemployment rate at 23.4%, while Northern Jerash Governorate had the lowest rate at 18.4%. These figures provide insight into the labor market situation in different regions of the country and highlight disparities between them.

Overall, despite efforts to address this issue, there is still much work to be done to create more job opportunities for Jordan’s population and reduce its high unemployment rate.
