On Tuesday, King Abdullah II of Jordan presented the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) with a medal as a token of appreciation for its humanitarian aid efforts towards Palestinian refugees. The Royal Court issued a statement declaring the prestigious award of the First Class Independence Medal to UNRWA. This recognition was given in acknowledgment of UNRWA’s continuous dedication to providing humanitarian aid, basic services, and care for refugees.

During a conference held in Sowayma, near Amman, King Abdullah emphasized the crucial importance of supporting UNRWA in carrying out its humanitarian missions as per its UN mandate. He highlighted the grave consequences of obstructing UNRWA’s work in Gaza, affecting almost two million Palestinian refugees. In his speech at the conference, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged the world to unite in safeguarding UNRWA against malicious attacks. Guterres emphasized the ongoing significance of UNRWA’s role even beyond conflicts.

In January, Israel accused some UNRWA workers of involvement in an attack by Hamas on the southern part of the country, leading to a suspension of support from some countries, including the United States. However, after some reconsideration, funding was resumed to help UNRWA deliver aid to Gaza despite the challenges faced by them. Despite this setback, UNRWA continues its essential work in providing assistance to Palestinian refugees amidst difficult circumstances.
