The government of Jersey has announced its decision to eliminate its dedicated women’s health strategy. This was revealed by the Assistant Minister for Health during a session in the States Assembly. Deputy Andy Howell explained that the government did not want to pursue a separate strategy due to inadequate funding. This conclusion was reached after consultation with an advisory group, who acknowledged the limited resources available for focusing on a stand-alone approach. Instead, they agreed to concentrate on ongoing initiatives, such as reviewing laws regarding termination of pregnancy and providing funding for IVF and contraception services.

During the same session, lawmakers also approved changes to the funding model for IVF treatment. Although some means-testing will remain in place, the health minister successfully introduced an amendment to modify the current system. These decisions reflect the government’s commitment to optimizing resource allocation and prioritizing existing healthcare initiatives.

The elimination of Jersey’s dedicated women’s health strategy has sparked controversy among local residents and healthcare providers. Some have expressed concern about the impact this decision could have on women’s access to healthcare services, particularly those related to reproductive health. Others argue that it is necessary given the limited funding available and that ongoing initiatives should be prioritized instead.
