The Tokyo authorities are taking proactive steps to address the declining birth rate in Japan by launching their own marriage appointment application. This new application will provide a push for individuals seeking marriage partners who may not actively participate in events or use existing applications to find a match. Unlike traditional matchmaking events, users will be required to undergo an interview to confirm their identity.

The Tokyo authorities aim to encourage individuals seeking marriage partners to connect with potential partners through the new application. The application has been in testing since last year and is part of a larger effort to address Japan’s declining birth rate, which has decreased by 5.1% in 2023 for the eighth consecutive year. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has pledged to implement measures to increase the birth rate, including financial support for families and improved access to childcare.

In an effort to make the application as accessible as possible, users will be required to provide documentation proving their single status, sign a document expressing their intention to get married, and submit a tax receipt showing their annual salary.
