Japan has been ranked third in a travel and tourism development report released by the World Economic Forum. The country scored high for its natural and cultural resources, as well as its transport infrastructure. This makes it the highest-ranking country in the Asia-Pacific region.

While Japan held the top spot in the previous report released in 2021 during the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s report used different criteria. Among these criteria, Japan ranked second for cultural resources and fourth in ground and port infrastructure. However, it received lower marks in price competitiveness, tourist service, and infrastructure indicators.

Despite these areas for improvement, Japan remains a popular travel destination due to its unique blend of rich history and natural beauty. According to the report, one striking image that captured Japan’s beauty was a photo taken at Asakurayama Sengen Park in Fujiyoshida, showcasing Mt. Fuji, a red five-story pagoda, and cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Overall, among the 119 countries and regions evaluated, France came in fourth place and Australia in fifth. In the Asia-Pacific region, China ranked eighth, Singapore 13th
