Italian player Jasmine Paolini has made history at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round for the first time in her career. She achieved this feat by defeating seventh-seeded Canadian Bianca Andreescu in an impressive display on Court One under the roof.

Paolini, a 28-year-old who had never won a match at Wimbledon before this year, was able to sustain her level of play throughout the match, winning 7-6 (7-4) 6-1. Initially, both players looked evenly matched in the first set, but Andreescu was unable to maintain her form.

Paolini’s journey to the second week of Wimbledon is all the more remarkable given that she had not gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam until 2024. In the next round, she will face either Madison Keys or Marta Kostyuk.

The match between Paolini and Andreescu was a rematch of their French Open third round encounter five weeks prior, which Paolini also won in three sets. Andreescu, currently ranked 176th in the world, struggled to maintain her form in the match, losing the final six games of the second set.

Delighted with her performance, Paolini stated, “I think I played a good match. I tried to be aggressive because, if not, I am going to have to run so much.” In other matches, Emma Navarro defeated Diana Shnaider, setting up a match against either second seed Coco Gauff or Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the next round.
