Italian President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the importance of Italy’s place in the wider European Union community in a message to prefects ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections. He reminded them that sovereignty will be consecrated during these elections, and urged them to uphold Italy’s values and interests within the EU.

Senator Claudio Borghi from the Northern League immediately objected to this message on social media, claiming that if Mattarella believes sovereignty belongs to the EU instead of Italy, he should resign. Borghi defended his comments throughout the day, stating that it is legitimate and obvious that Italy is a sovereign nation.

Matteo Salvini, leader of Lega, also weighed in on the controversy but clarified that they are not seeking anyone’s resignation. However, Antonio Tajani, an ally of Forza Italia, criticized Borghi’s stance on European sovereignty, emphasizing that Italy is both Italian and European. Tajani expressed solidarity with President Mattarella and underscored the importance of respecting democracy and upholding Italy’s interests within the EU.

Other politicians also condemned Borghi’s attack on Mattarella and his comments on sovereignty. Giorgia Meloni and Giuseppe Conte expressed their support for Mattarella’s message while Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda highlighted its importance for maintaining Italian democracy. Luana Zanella also weighed in, stressing the need for all Italians to work together to protect their country’s values and interests within Europe.
