President Mattarella has arrived in Dublin for a visit that includes an informal meeting with President Michael D. Higgins and a ceremony to donate the garden of the Italian ambassador’s residence to the city. The two presidents have a long-standing relationship, marked by formal meetings and informal visits over the years. The visit will focus on Europe, common Arraiolos summits, and their shared pro-European stance, especially after Brexit.

After some morning meetings, President Mattarella, accompanied by his daughter Laura, will attend a dinner hosted by President Higgins and his wife Sabrina at the presidential residence. The following day, the two presidents will visit Lucan House for the inauguration of Parco Italia, a garden donated to South Dublin County Council. The garden was previously at the residence of the Italian Ambassadors to Ireland and now features a permanent exhibition curated by the Italian ambassador and the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome.

The visit aims to strengthen the excellent relations between Italy and Ireland, emphasizing their shared pro-European stance. Despite recent political changes in Ireland, including the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the relationship between the two countries remains strong. Varadkar’s successor, Simon Harris, faces challenges ahead of the next general elections in 2025, with Sinn Fèin leading in latest polls.

During his visit to Parco Italia, President Mattarella will engage in conversation with President Higgins before departing for Rome later that afternoon. This visit serves as an opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their cultural and diplomatic ties while also highlighting their commitment towards European values.
