Italy is demanding a significant role in the new EU Commission following the recent parliamentary elections. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has stated that Italy needs a Vice President with an important portfolio to ensure the stability of Europe.

When asked about the possibility of former Italian prime minister and ECB chief Mario Draghi becoming the new EU Commission President, Tajani stated that Draghi is an expert but not a politician. The EPP, which emerged as the strongest group in the European Parliament, supports giving current Commission President Ursula von der Leyen a second term in Brussels. However, it remains uncertain whether she would secure enough votes if nominated by EU heads of state and government.
