Giorgia Meloni, the Italian Prime Minister, and Albanian President Edi Rama recently visited the new migrant center in Shengjin to see firsthand the progress of a 670 million euro project that will be operational by August 2024. The complex will consist of two hotspots and will increase the capacity of the centers to accommodate more migrants in the future.

During a press conference, Meloni emphasized the importance of ensuring that rights are not violated in migrant centers. She also highlighted the importance of Italy’s agreement with Albania on managing migratory flows and preventing human trafficking.

Rama expressed regret for any misinformation spread by the Italian press about Albania following the agreement. He underscored that it is a demonstration of friendship and responsibility between Italy and Albania and that his country did not ask for any financial compensation.

The leaders of both countries emphasized their commitment to working together to address immigration issues, including combating human trafficking and irregular migration, while ensuring a safe and orderly migration process.
