On Tuesday, Israel’s Navy employed a naval anti-missile defense system for the first time to intercept a drone launched from the Red Sea towards Eilat. The Saar 6 type corvette successfully captured the unmanned aerial vehicle using the ‘Naval Dome’ system during the night, as reported on social media platform X.

In response to increased missile launches by Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeting commercial ships, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has deployed ships to the Red Sea. The Houthi rebels are believed to be retaliating against events in Gaza. Additionally, pro-Iranian militia Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli territories and an oil port in Ashkelon, located north of Gaza Strip.

Over the past few years, Israeli Navy has acquired four Saar 6 type corvettes from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The latest of these ships, measuring approximately 90 meters long and 13 meters wide, arrived in Haifa in 2021. The deployment of this naval defense system represents a significant development in Israel’s defense capabilities against potential threats in the region.
