The summer season is in full swing, but unfortunately, the number of drowning cases is on the rise. Last weekend, four men drowned in the Dead Sea, with three of them being rushed to Soroka Hospital in serious and moderate condition. A week ago, a 50-year-old man was found dead on the beach of the Ashkelon National Park after drowning in the sea. These are just a few examples of the recent increase in drowning cases in Israel.

According to data from MDA, since the start of the season, 166 people and children have drowned in Israel, with 20 people losing their lives. This marks an alarming 46% increase compared to the same period last year. The majority of drownings have occurred on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in pools and water reservoirs.

Doral Erzuan, a senior paramedic at MDA, attributes this surge to factors such as unannounced beaches, lack of supervision and distractions like alcohol or phones. Children are particularly vulnerable to drowning accidents due to not knowing how to swim properly. Erzuan advises that parents should keep a close eye on their children while they’re near water and ensure that they know how to swim safely before letting them into any body of water.

Orly Silvinger CEO of Betram organization for child safety emphasizes that proper training and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial for preventing drowning incidents among children. She encourages parents to be vigilant when their children are near water and follow safety protocols.

In case of emergency situations such as a drowning incident, Erzuan advises immediate action by calling 101 for assistance. He warns against attempting rescue unless properly trained as it can lead to further accidents.

It’s important that we all take responsibility for our own safety while enjoying time near water during this summer season by following lifeguard instructions and staying safe!
