The Iraqi government has announced plans to strengthen its air defense and surveillance capabilities as the international coalition’s mission in the country comes to an end. During a ceremony to open the new Air Defense Command operations center, Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Muhammad Shia al-Sudani emphasized the importance of safeguarding Iraq’s security and sovereignty over its land, air, and waters.

In a statement released by his office, al-Sudani stated that protecting Iraq’s airspace from violations and improving immediate response capabilities are key objectives of the government’s defense program. He commended the leaders and officers involved in the establishment and operation of the new command center, which was developed in partnership with French company Thales.

Al-Sudani has consistently emphasized that the international coalition’s presence in Iraq is no longer justified and that there is no longer a need for foreign forces on Iraqi soil. By continuing to enhance Iraq’s defense capabilities, the government aims to ensure the country’s security and sovereignty independently. The Prime Minister highlighted that protecting Iraq’s airspace from violations is critical to ensuring national security and sovereignty over its land, air, and waters.
