In the first round of Iran’s presidential election, Masud Pezeshkian, a moderate candidate, is currently leading the race. Although there will be a run-off election next Friday, it is unlikely to change Iran’s fundamental direction. Pezeshkian received 44 percent of the vote in the first round, just ahead of his closest rival, conservative candidate Said Jalili.

The election had four candidates in total, with only Pezeshkian being considered a moderate. The selection of candidates was restricted by the conservative Guardian Council, resulting in a low voter turnout of just 40 percent. Despite being considered more moderate than Jalili, Pezeshkian is still a loyal follower of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards.

During his campaign, Pezeshkian criticized heavy-handed security forces and advocated for a more relaxed approach to strict regulations. He also promised to improve Iran’s relations with the West. If Pezeshkian wins in the run-off election, he would have limited influence as the real power in Iran lies with Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards.

Iran’s political situation remains tense due to economic crises and regional conflicts posing challenges. Khamenei and his inner circle may be looking for a more moderate voice in the presidential office to ease tensions both domestically and internationally. With tensions escalating in the Middle East, a moderate president could be beneficial for Iran’s stability.

Despite this tension, however, there are still some positive signs coming from Iranians who are hoping for change in their country’s leadership and policies towards democracy and human rights.
