A recent study by the FDA found that eight people in four states became sick after consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand microdosing chocolate bars. Microdosing involves taking a small dose of a drug, typically a psychedelic, to avoid feeling any effects.

In recent years, the microdosing industry has grown as companies aim to transform drugs like MDMA into approved medicines. This “psychedelics renaissance” began in 2020 according to Business Insider. Pitchbook data shows that psychedelics companies accumulated $163.6 million in investments during the first three quarters of 2020.

Despite advertising its products as microdoses, Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars do not contain any psychedelics. The company offers over a dozen products, including chocolate bars in six flavors. According to their FAQ, these treats are made with a “proprietary blend of natural ingredients” and are free from psychedelic substances, yet still promise an enjoyable experience.

After consuming the chocolate bars, people experienced severe symptoms such as seizures, central nervous system depression, nausea, vomiting, agitation, abnormal heart rates, and hyper/hypotension. All eight individuals sought medical attention, with six requiring hospitalization, but no fatalities were reported.

The FDA is currently working to determine the cause of these illnesses and is considering what steps to take next. More information will be shared as it becomes available. Despite the incident
