The Indianapolis Star has a team of dedicated journalists who work tirelessly to bring news from Central Indiana to its readers. In a new feature, the paper will introduce its staff to the audience. This week, the spotlight falls on Nat Newell, the Sports Editor.

Nat joined IndyStar in October 2023 and one of his favorite aspects of his job is working with a talented team to provide stories that people enjoy reading. He loves solving problems and finds that journalism provides him with the perfect opportunity to do so. His initial interest in journalism came from not being able to hit a good fastball.

When he’s not working, Nat enjoys spending time with his kids, playing Vintage Base Ball, working out, and reading. He has two favorite quotes – one from Hugh Keough and the other from John Maynard Keynes. Nat is known for jamming out to “Shake It Off” in his car and prefers cats over dogs.

One surprising fact about Nat is that he can sew – a skill he compares to journalism where you take various elements and create something new. Currently, he is reading detective series and sports books, alternating based on his mood. His first job involved delivering newspapers.
