Earlier this month, eight finalists were recognized for their outstanding entries in a data art competition hosted by the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia. The grand prize was awarded to Julia Daser and Pepi Ng from New York’s The New School, while Peter Cybriwsky, a 2019 UVA alum, won the People’s Choice Award for his real-time generative and data art installation titled “Nebulae.”

The competition received submissions from artists in nine different countries, with over 130 entries showcasing their unique interpretations of the theme “Our World.” The finalists’ works included “Reef Generations” by UVA music professor Matthew Burtner and “LA AQI: 1980-2024” by Charlottesville artist Steve Haske.

The School of Data Science plans to continue hosting data art competitions in the future and use its exhibition space for regional artist showcases and collaborations with K-12 art programs. The eight finalists’ works will be on display in the building until the end of the year, providing visitors with an opportunity to interact with the art on display and admire the permanent data science sculpture.
